2005 Peak Spring Flows

A 7,000 cubic feet per second release from Trinity Dam this year is the highest release since the dam was completed in 1963. The previous highest releases were 6,000 cfs.

In wet and extremely wet water-type years, flows are intended to reach 8,500 and 11,000 cfs, although necessary floodplain changes -- structure removal, structure relocations, well relocations, road changes, etc., do not presently allow for such releases.

This year was classified as a normal water-type year that provides for a maximum 6,000 cfs release. However, to develop data beyond computer models of the effects of flows exceeding 6,000 cfs, it was determined to be beneficial to provide for the 7,000 cfs release. Some beneficial geomorphic changes also could be achieved possibly with the additional 1,000 cfs flow. Total water volume returned to the river in accordance with the December 2000 Record of Decision for a normal water-type year has not been exceeded.
